DIY Concrete Coffee Table
My first ever Concrete Coffee Table!
Concrete is something that is in my blood. My grandfather and my father both worked on road crews and did an excessive amount of concrete work around there homes when i was younger. Being a big kid, I feel lie i spent half my childhood hauling wheel barrows full of cement around. So you could say I have an intimate and long relationship for concrete. I am drawn to it. So it has been on my list for a long time to do some furniture with. When a client asked for some concrete in a custom build, I jumped on the chance to get some practice and I made this Concrete Coffee Table for myself!

A Few Issues….
As simple as this table looks, I did have some issues. First being with my mold. Concrete furniture is made using molds made from melamine. I made my initial mold to the size i wanted. But I mad the mistake of using brad nails to put the form together, and i used button head screws to reinforce it. Well, i forgot to countersink those too. So it tore out the melamine.
I then poured Quikrete 5000 into the mold and reinforced it with some wire mesh from Home Depot. I shook all the bubbles out of it and let it sit for about 5 days. As it sat the mold must have sagged or the form moved or something, because when i took it out the top was bowed like an archway. So, back to the drawing board. For round two I decided to change it up.
I used GFRC for the second go around. GFRC is a glass fiber reinforced concrete. Its a mixture of Portland cement, sand, fiberglass shreds, and fortified with acrylic. I begin by spraying a thin layer of cement into a properly made form. Then back filling it with a fiberglass reinforced mixture i lay in by hand. I covered the mold with plastic and let it sit for 2 days. This time it came out awesome! I sanded it to 400 grit and sealed it. I welded up a simple modern base, and this piece was done!
